
Was born in Tehran in 1940. He was the first composer in Iran who has brought the message of modernism in music. His first teachers were Lotfollah Mofakham Payan (Iranian music), Hossein Nasehi (composition) and Ophelia Kombajian (piano). He finished his education in Vienna in 1963. Hanns Jelinek and Karl Schiske were his composition teachers in Vienna. Mashayekhi went to Utrecht, the Netherlands, to pursue his study of electronic and computer music, which included attending lectures by Gottfried Michael Koenig who was one of the founders of the Institute of Sonology. In 1993, with cooperation of the pianist Farima Ghavam-Sadri, Mashayekhi founded the Tehran Music Group. In 1995, he established the Iranian Orchestra for New Music. In Iran, so many orchestras and classical musicians were introduced to Modernism in music by his works and pieces.
He is one of the first Iranian composers whose works were performed in a series
of New Music concerts in Europe. Alireza Mashayekhi is a faculty member of the
Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Tehran.
